2015 Modern Home Tour in Vancouver BC
For those with an interest in modern architecture and design, home tours are unique way to explore British Columbia’s cites and tour modern featured homes of recognized builders, architects & designers.
On Saturday, September 19, as part of Western Living Magazine’s Design Week, the Modern Home Tours is coming back to the Vancouver area with a collection of very high standard homes that will allow attendees to explore a uniquely West Coast style of midcentury modernist architecture practiced by recognized architects and designers in Vancouver. This year, a White Rock Modern Home Tour has been added . Attendees will have the opportunity to join in a self guided tour of seven beautiful homes in Vancouver and five in White Rock.
“Modern Tours LLC was founded by James Leasure, in Austin, Texas in 2010, to introduce people to modern architecture in cities across the U.S. and Canada with carefully selected architects, neighborhoods and architecture.”

We had the opportunity to speak to one of the White Rock tour participants, owner and custom home builder of the “OShaun” home, Owen & Shauna Poppy – Surfside Construction. We learned they felt compelled to participate in the tour because this year’s tour is serving as a fundraising vehicle for students in the fashion industry and also that the Chip and Shannon Wilson School of Design (part of Kwantlen Polytechnic University) has been named as the Modern Home Tour local non-profit partner and beneficiary. “It is a great way to get involved and support the community we live in” said, Shauna Poppy.
“OShaun” (Ocean – Owen & Shauna) – “A Modern/Rustic Beach House is a cumulative combination of ideas and materials born from 5 decades of living on and around Semiahmoo Bay and the joy of living a wonderful life together.” Shauna shared with us how they chose the building and accent materials that were used to build their home. “We choose natural materials that will age gracefully and are low maintenance. materials that mimic natural elements such as the ocean and the sand,” said Ms. Poppy.
Their vision for their home was for the inside to become the outside.

We also spoke to the builder and architect of another of the White Rock home tour participants with Galadriel, Kliewer Bros. Construction Ltd and Iredale Group Architecture.
Galadriel is a refined, modern home with the warmth and strength inherently found in West Coast architecture.
“Fir beams and stone materials were used for the construction of this home to create a robust, low maintenance, crisp and sharp ambiance,” said architect Peter Hildebrand – Iredale Group Architecture.
“Galadriel design and architecture is timeless and it will never go out of style. It will be a prime example of great architecture for future generations. It was built to last,” said builder Harv Kliewer from Kliewer Bros. Construction Ltd.
Galadriel is an incredible collaboration between architect and builder, color scheme and textures tide together cohesively. They were able to achieve an easy transition and consistent contemporary look from the indoors to the outdoors.
We urge you to attend the tours (get your tickets before they are sold out) because these tours are an excellent educational experience to learn about West Coast living.
